Ratchet Gas – Pickster & Riot Earp [Do Androids Dance Exclusive]
One of the things that the influx of trap did for the EDM scene was open up the doors for more takes on established sounds. Sure, moombahton reinvented reggaeton for the dance music set, and trap really is just reimagining the Dirty South-style of hip-hop, but it’s not more acceptable to play around with these undiscovered BPMs, at least in a dance music realm. DAD gave you a peek at this EP with Buzz Trillington’s brilliant promo mix, but now we present to you We Keep It, an EP stuck entirely at 100BPM.
One DAD commenter called this “hyphy,” which might work, but that might be missing the point; we’re not in a time where we need to label everything. We’re daily fighting those who say “you need not label everything,” while then having to realize that people do need holes to pigeon sounds into. Right now, we’re good with Buzz, Shooter McNappin, Riot Earp (love that name!), Notixx, Pickster One, and Ape Drums keeping it 1hunnid, having us live in this eternal twerk zone, where damn near everything is possible. Each track on this one is dope, plain and simple, and at the very least, it let’s DAD know that we’ve barely scratched the surface when it comes to what dance music can acquire and rediscover.

The AZ Gunslingaz formed just over a year ago in Phoenix Arizonaton. A band of producers pulling from many different backgrounds that came together to push the Phoenix electronic music scene/sound out of the Clubs of Phoenix, and Into Bass Cabinets all over the world. With great success from Vol.1 last summer, Pickster One, DJ Melo, Mendez, Riot Earp, Sluggo & Ellery all pushing the Southwest Tropical Bass sounds, showcase the growth of the group as producers and their individual musical tastes on Vol.2 touching on Moombahton, Kuduro, Trap, Juke, and Moombahcore with influences from Brazilian Drums, Spanish Flamenco guitar, Chicago Juke to some good Ole Southwest Phoenix Moombahton. Trying to keep up with these kids can be tuff, just look for the Dust cloud in the desert and the AZ Gunslingaz won’t be far away.

9 Months ago I Collabed with DJ Melo on our second tune “I Can Make You Dance” for the Moombahton Massive III SXSW compilation. as a by standard I went with Melo to the Massive in Austin, TX and watched him, Dave Nada, Sabo, Dillon Francis, A-mac, Orion, Toy Selectah, and a handful of others change my life in 1 single night. At a most crucial period in moombahton’s global expansion, Phoenix, Arizona’s Pickster One curates The Rise of Moombahton, a compilation spotlighting the top sounds in the growing vastness of progressive mid-tempo global bass. The seasonal moombahton compilations started in July 2010 as Munchi gathered 24 of the finest tracks in the genre from 22 separate producers in order to prove, as the now instant legend producer stated, “(that) moombahton is here to stay!”

Fast forward 14 months, and the importance of the seasonal compilations has increased. Dance pop superstar Skrillex has the inventor, Dave Nada and his collaborator Matt Nordstrom on tour as openers for his Mothership Tour, with a separate fall and winter tour planned for Nadastrom’s own Scion A/V and forthcoming Mad Decent releases. Names that dominated the July 2010 release like Heartbreak, Munchi, DJ Sabo, Pickster One and DJ Melo are starting to tour, in some cases internationally, now maintaining a busy schedule between touring and now constantly churning out new material. Moombahton has grown from an accident into potentially the next major windfall for not just American, but international dance.

Global powerhouse dance journal Mixmag has taken notice of the American upstart with immense global potential, and now presents The Rise of Moombahton (Fall 2011 compilation). For neophyte fans of the genre only aware of Mad Decent’s Blow Your Head: Volume 2 compilation, this is the perfect next level. “Introducing” producers who have been down from  day one, the sounds here include all of moombahton’s many variations, brilliantly produced by top tier professionals.

It’s not a crazy idea to presume that within the next six or nine months that more established mainstream dance producers will adopt the sound and attempt to mimic it’s inherent revolutionary sensibilities. By moombahton’s next winter, the heat could be so hot in the genre that it feels like a completely different season and radically different time.

Pickster Feat. on Mad Decent’s own Paul Devero’s Latest Mix.
“Pineapples for Pinnipeds Mix ”

Pineapples for Pinnepeds by Aritzia

Mad Decent Records’ Paul Devro is a veritable treasure trove of rare international riddims. Acutely aware of the places where the underground and mainstream can merge, expecting nothing less than brilliance from the producer and selector in gauging moombahton’s crossover potential would undercut his considerable talents. Pineapples for Pinnipeds explores the more pop friendly edge of our favorite tropical bass sound. According to Devro himself, “I tried to piece together a mix of all the latest vocal moombahton songs that hit the right spot but without veering too far into rave territory. In my opinion, this is a good example of where moombahton pop is headed: keeping an urban feel, but taming the redundant high pitch squealie synths.”

Here is a remix I did for the David Heartbreak Presents: Moombahsoul VOL III compilation. I remixed the Amazing tune “You Make Me Smile” by Aloe Blacc. This song Grabbed me while I was DJ’ing My Homies Wedding. The Live soul elements just really get ahold of you. I decided to kepp the Live elements and add Live Drumming by the Homie Scottie White of my Group Crusher Sound System. I think this remix keeps the Original Soul Essence the song had and added a nice Live Moombahton Feel to it.

Aloe Blacc – You Make Me Smile (Pickster Remix Feat. Scottie White) by PicksterOne

All goods must come to an end… well not really, but giving things to time to evolve and grow. This moombahsoul sub genre I created was  started by experimentation and trying to push the boundaries further. Moombahsoul has turned people on to EDM, who normally had no idea of what those letters stand for. This is the last installment that will be presented by Heartbreak. The Next Volume Will be respectfully handled and hosted by Sabo, Jon Kwest, and Atlantic Connection….  This in my opionion is the best soul compliation to date. It touches, all levels of soul, deep house, cumbia, and even trance elements.
